1. We love hiking! We're not especially good at it or anything, but we love exploring, getting slightly (or totally) lost together, and then enjoying the adventure and quality time as we find our way back home.
2. Our dogs both love the outdoors too, but otherwise they are total opposites. Mission is slowing down from old age and spends most of her time curled up cozy in a blanket... and will give you very judgy eyes if you disturb her. Penguin, on the other hand, is barely over a year old. He's got ENDLESS energy and is ALWAYS ready for a run!!!
3. Bonjé's favorite color is red and Josh's favorite color is midnight blue (or TARDIS blue!)
4. Josh had never seen Doctor Who until he met Bonjé. Now, he's even more obsessed than she is. Safe to say that her indoctrination plan worked. 😂
5. Josh is also OBSESSED with Elvis. A turntable with Elvis records and a plethora of Elvis home decor were non-negotiables when we got married. After years of planning and saving, we finally visited Graceland in 2023. Josh was so excited he could barely remember how to breathe. He could have stood there for HOURS just admiring all of Elvis' elaborate jumpsuits! 😅6. Bonjé's non-negotiable is chocolate. Never get between that woman and her chocolate. Bring her an unlimited supply of dark chocolate and you will be besties for life.7. Know what else Bonjé is obsessed with? Comfy blankets and stuffies. Basically anything to make life softer and more cozy. Thus we have at least one stuffie on our bed at all times. And Josh sleeps under one dinky little blanket, while Bonjé burrows under her 6-inch fortress of cozy blankets every night.
8. Josh's cozy feelings come from fancy food! Josh loves to cook super yummy things with all sorts of different spices. Throw baking in the mix, though, and Josh will probably burn those brownies.
9. Bonjé is the TOTAL opposite in the kitchen. She can bake any sweet treat your heart desires... think cookies, pies, scones, you name it! BUT if you ask her to cook meat on the stovetop, all of a sudden the kitchen will no longer be a safe space for her. Hot, spitting oil is scary!!
10. Speaking of opposites: Josh grew up dodging tourists and navigating public transit as a big city kid in San Francisco, California. Meanwhile, Bonjé grew up tossing hay bales and birthing goat kids on a tiny Midwest farm. We have definitely both learned a lot about life from our in-law families! Here's a photo of one of the baby lambs Josh fell in love with on the farm.
11. Josh's family is dark Irish and Filipino. Bonjé's family is Italian and Dutch. We both grew up deciphering foreign accents from our grandparents. We love hearing and reading all the stories our ancestors have left us! And yes, Bonjé's name is inherited from her family in the Netherlands.
12. Josh is an only child. Meanwhile, Bonjé is the youngest of nine. So we will never have nieces and nephews on Josh's side of the family, but we've lost count on Bonjé's side of the family.
13. Another funny opposite— baby Josh was born 3 months premature, weighing less than 3 1/2 pounds, requiring medical intervention to even have a chance at life. Meanwhile, baby Bonjé took things slow and was born 10 days late, at home, weighing over 10 1/2 pounds. From the very beginning, we decided that being average was overrated!! 😆
14. Today, we both balance our love for adventure with the limitations of chronic illness. Josh has diabetes, while Bonjé has POTS and fibromyalgia, but sometimes our symptoms look pretty similar so we can definitely commiserate. 😅 We're definitely not afraid to be blunt and honest about our health as we prove (especially to ourselves) that life's adventures don't have to stop just because you're sick.15. Sometimes our photos will show Bonjé in a wheelchair— don't worry, this is normal! Bonjé is an "ambulatory wheelchair user" (look it up if you don't know what that means). Basically, POTS reduces her ability to stand still for long periods of time. So, for example: when we go to visit a new aquarium, which is one of Bonjé's absolute FAVORITEST things, but requires hours of slowly walking and standing around to look at alllll the fishies, that's the equivalent of running a marathon for Bonjé. So we bring her wheelchair along so she can have equal access and actually enjoy the super cute fishies without internally feeling like she's dying. Our best wheelchair-aquarium memory?? The one where Josh got down on one knee and Bonjé got a shiny new engagement ring. 😊
16. We got married on April Fool's Day. Not even kidding!! And Bonjé stuck to tradition and wore a white dress for the ceremony, but then swapped dresses in the car and showed up to the reception in a black, sparkly, galaxy-inspired dress. Just in time to make our entrance through the homemade TARDIS that Bonjé's dad built for the occasion! So yeah... we firmly believe that "normal" is overrated and we're gonna live our crazy lives how we actually want to, Doctor Who and all, despite any judgy glances that may come our way!
17. We love to travel and see new places, but we're not exactly rich. 😅 So we plan and save, choose our travel goals carefully, and then it feels extra special whenever we do finally get to go somewhere new. We were SUPER broke right after we got married. So for our immediate honeymoon, we took a road trip all the way through Texas, down to Corpus Christi (and we definitely found a cool new aquarium there, too!). Today, we're working on saving up just a little more, and then sometime soon we've got plans for our delayed dream honeymoon in London. So that we can go visit all the Doctor Who sites, of course!!
18. Our newlywed life was majorly defined by post-graduation "you're either too over-educated or too under-experienced for this job" unemployment. Today, we are very thankful to both have full-time jobs at the moment. Josh is a high school American Sign Language teacher (with the full support of our local Deaf community), and Bonjé is a Certified Medical Assistant working as a disability claims processor.
19. After work, it's quilting time! Bonjé will spend HOURS pulling out pretty fabric, cutting it up into tiny pieces, and then stitching it all back together again. Cuz that totally makes sense, right?? 😅 This is how heirlooms are made!! Meanwhile, Josh will physically bring food and set it in front of her so she doesn't get so distracted by all the pretty fabric that she totally forgets to eat!! Bonjé's second favorite hobby, of course, is buying fabric for her next quilt. If we ever do become rich someday, Bonjé's got plans for where that money can go... 😂
20. When not quilting or buying fabric, our evenings are usually spent cramming homework in before the next big deadline or test. We already finished college once and never saw this twist coming, but we now find ourselves both actively going back to school... this time for each other's original degrees! So Bonjé is studying American Sign Language, while Josh is finishing up a Biblical Studies degree.
21. We are both Christians. Not the super judgy you're-going-to-hell-if-you-eat-that-cheeseburger kind (trust me, we've both been there and pray we never become that legalistic again), but rather the kind that just honestly loves Jesus. Please know that if you are NOT a Christian, you are still very much welcome here. Just be aware that as we write about our lives, the topic of our faith will definitely come up a bit too. Our personal goal is to not just leave our religion at church, but to integrate our faith into our daily lives so that everything we do is an example of God's love. (We're DEFINITELY not perfect, and never will be, but this is our goal!! 😊)22. We have WAY too many tennis balls in our house. Courtesy of this little maniac. So if you ever come over for tea, watch your step!! 😆
