A New Hobby for a New Year (welcome to our hobby blog!)

A blog header photo with the title "A New Hobby for a New Year: Welcome to our new Hobby Blog!". In the background, a to-do list is scribbled: 1. eat chocolate, 2. take a nap, 3. start a blog called "The O'Hara Tea"

Do you ever get that urge to start a new hobby just for the fun of it? This week we got bitten by the "new hobby bug". Call it a New Year's resolution, or a way to shush the anxiety of the ominous polar ice storm barreling our direction, or just something new and shiny to quell the boredom of winter break. Whatever it is, we decided to build a blog! A peek into yesterday morning's lazy Saturday morning convo:

Super sleepy Josh: "Whyyyy are you awake, and WHAT in the world are you fervently googling?"
Me: "I can't sleep and my brain is racing. It's probably stupid."
Josh: "...go on..."
Me: "Okay... what if we wrote an actual blog together?? We already have our Instagram account that we love running together, and this would just be like a bigger extension of that. I've been toying with the idea for a few months but I'm not sure if it's something you would even wanna do, or if I'm ready to commit to the work it would take... I dunno. See? I told you. It's totally stupid."
Josh: "Not stupid. That's funny, I've been toying with the same idea for a few months too, but I wasn't sure how we would even set it up so I never mentioned it. Do you think anyone would even wanna read it?"
Me: "Challenge accepted!"

A young woman (Bonjé) sits in the car and holds up a bundle of Christmas fabric she just bought at the store.
You'd think I already have enough hobbies. I could show you all my quilt projects and talk your ear off about different quilting techniques for DAYS! 😅 I recently bought a stack of super cute Christmas fabric on holiday clearance (photo for proof!). Stay tuned to see what my plans are for it! And I have a BUNCH of other super random crafty skills tucked away in the back of my brain (from my 14 years as a 4-H kid) which also make their appearance every once in a while.

Historically, Josh has had his own hobbies too, but becoming a first-year high school teacher this past fall has reduced his free time quite a bit. So as of today, Josh's self-reported list of hobbies goes as follows:

1. Playing the guitar

2. NOT drowning in teacher paperwork

3. Suffering through stupid rom-coms my wife forces me to watch with her (Our taste in movies is VERY different... he only entertains my movie selections because he loves me!! And I feel very flattered that he considers this a hobby... although— truth be told, I'm fairly certain the part he considers a hobby is pointing out all the ridiculous plot holes!! 🤣)

A young man (Josh) holds a microphone at Sun Studio and pretends to sing like Elvis. A picture of Elvis singing into that exact microphone in hanging on the wall behind him.
I would also add to that list that he loves to explore new foods, whether that be trying out a new restaurant in town or cooking up something tasty in our own kitchen. And he shines when he gets to pick out the perfect gift for someone special in our lives. And as much as he complains about his Theology homework, researching and building an apologetic argument is definitely somewhere up there on his list too. Lastly, anything to do with Elvis is always gonna be very high on his list of favorites. This photo was taken at Sun Studio in Memphis, TN. Josh got to hold the very same microphone that Elvis once held (with the studio's permission, of course). Can you tell he enjoyed that trip... just a tiny bit! 😅

This is us. We're not perfect, and we will never pretend to be. We're definitely not trying to write a blog so we can craft a perfect online persona or to make big bucks through some get-rich-quick scheme. We just want a little creative outlet for our brains to have a space to relax in after a long day at work. So this is just for funsies, meaning we're not gonna abide by some of the more traditional blogging rules, especially when it comes to frequency of posts or sticking to one specific "niche". Our niche is our young married life and all the eclectic craziness that comes with it.

Two cute dogs (an adult Jack Russell/Rat Terrier and a Border Collie mix puppy) cuddle together in front of the fireplace.
This is us. That's it. We hope you enjoy a peek into our crazy little life! Stick around as we cook up trouble in our kitchen, stitch quilts together with love, show off some cute pics of our crazy doggos, and ponder random deep thoughts. And who knows what else? Time will tell.

In the meantime, here's one of the cutest doggo photos we've got. Penguin has grown up so fast that he's quadrupled in size since I took this picture!

We hope you have a great week. And stay safe out there with the big storm coming. 🙏

'Til next time,

Bonjé
